Martin L. Miller grew up in the Bronx, New York. After finishing parochial schools and graduating from N.Y.U. with a Business Management degree, Martin pursued a business career in banking and consulting. During this time he also received an M.B.A. from St. John’s University in New York.
Martin’s next career step was into the law. After graduating from K.U. Law and being admitted to the Kansas and Federal District Court bars in April, 1981, Martin established a private practice in Lawrence. In 1985, he was hired as an Assistant Douglas County District Attorney and worked as a prosecutor for almost eleven years, leaving the office in 1996. During those years Martin was a member of the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association and the National District Attorneys Association. He also completed the Career Prosecutor Course at the University of Houston Law School in 1987. His work in the DA’s office included prosecuting all levels of cases from First Degree Murder to Disorderly Conduct, with dozens of jury trials.
In 1996, Martin reestablished his private practice in Lawrence and Kansas, handling a variety of civil and criminal matters. He is now a member of the Douglas County Juvenile Panel, representing parents and children in “child in need of care” and “juvenile offender” cases. He has also been a member of the Criminal Indigent Defense Panel, taking appointed cases of the highest felony levels. Martin has represented individuals charged with First Degree and Second Degree Murder; Aggravated Kidnapping; Aggravated Battery; Rape; Indecent Liberties; Possession of Cocaine; and Aggravated Burglary. He has had numerous jury trials, contested hearings and plea negotiations for many other cases. Martin has also served the Douglas County bar as chairman of the Impaired Lawyers Committee since 1995, and has been selected to serve as a Pro Tem judge in Small Claims Court and Traffic Court.
Martin’s reputation is excellent with all those who know him through work or otherwise. Let us know if he can put his experience to work for you. Call for an appointment: 785-841-8462, or e-mail millerlaw48@msn.com.
